Vanessa is one of the main characters in the book Maze of Moonlight by Gael Baudino. She is almost 17. She is about 5'8" with long blonde hair and large brown eyes. Her grandfather was elven and she was born with an ability to see the patterns to how events would happen - an ability that nearly drove her mad. And as she's from a world much like this one during the Inquisition. Part Elvish, part seer and much feared, she was a perfect target for them and so was sent away from home.
When she rejected the advances of a powerful man he beat her nearly to death - breaking her arms, legs, ribs and fracturing her skull. She was saved by the Elvish healers, Terrill and Mirya, which pushed her even more towards the Elvish side of herself, though the protagonist of the story, Christopher, helped her make sense of and somewhat control the images in her head.
At the end of the book she uses her elvish ability to see the 'Starlight' to go into the lattices of possible futures and change them to save her village and her people. This changes her almost completely Elvish - making her taller with lightly pointed ears, slightly more refined features, and an Elvish accent which wipes out her low country one. She knows she will never fit into her village again and is also deeply bothered by the fact that she used the lattices to make one man kill another to change the future. In the last pages of the book Christopher, who has fallen deeply in love with her, asks her to come back to his home where he is the Baron of Aurverelle and she does. For our purposes, he asks and she refuses as she does not love him in the same way. Terrill and Mirya suggest that Milieux will be a place where she can learn to deal with the new being that she is in safety.
